Reflecting Telescopes – Your Window to the Stars
Quick Overview – Why Choose a Reflecting Telescope?
A reflecting telescope – also called a reflector – delivers exceptional light-gathering power at an unbeatable price. With large apertures and no colour fringing, it reveals the Moon, planets and deep-sky objects in stunning detail – perfect for beginners and seasoned observers alike.
How Does a Reflecting Telescope Work?
At the heart of every reflector sits the primary mirror, gathering incoming light and bouncing it to a secondary mirror. This directs the concentrated light sideways to the eyepiece. Unlike refractors, reflectors work exclusively with mirrors, making them incredibly efficient at gathering light whilst remaining completely free from chromatic aberration – that annoying colour halo you get at the edge of the image.
Key Advantages:
---
Large apertures at affordable prices
Compact design despite long focal lengths
Brilliant for faint objects
No colour fringing whatsoever
Just remember: Mirrors need time to cool down and reach ambient temperature. They'll also need occasional collimation (alignment) to maintain peak performance.
What Types of Reflecting Telescopes Are There?
Newtonian Telescope
The classic Newtonian is the workhorse of reflecting telescopes. Its simple yet ingenious design gives you serious aperture for your money, making it excellent for deep-sky observing. The colour-true images make Newtonian telescopes ideal for nebulae and galaxies, though depending on the focal ratio, they handle planetary observation beautifully too. Collimation becomes second nature once you've done it a few times.
Dobsonian Telescope
The Dobson has transformed visual astronomy: it is essentially a Newtonian on a beautifully simple, rock-solid rocker-box mount. Ready to use in minutes, it delivers maximum aperture for minimum outlay. With mirror diameters from 114mm right up to 500mm and beyond, these scopes gather phenomenal amounts of light. Point-and-shoot simplicity makes them perfect starter telescopes, whilst the larger models keep even experienced observers coming back for more.
