Microscope FAQ

Here you will find the most frequently asked questions about microscopes.

Applications & Buying Guide

For most parasites like coccidia or worm eggs, a magnification of 400x–600x is sufficient. For example, the BRESSER Erudit DLX (monocular) is a good choice. For protozoa like Giardia or Toxoplasma, the Erudit DLX 1000x is recommended, as higher magnifications are useful. The oil immersion lens (100x) can also be added later. If you value comfortable binocular vision or a camera connection, the Researcher Bino or Trino models are more comfortable. For documentation, a BRESSER MikroCam 1.3 MP, which is compatible with all the mentioned models, is usually sufficient.
For this application, we recommend the BRESSER Erudit DLX 40-1000x microscope in combination with a USB camera, such as the BRESSER MikroCam 1.3 MP. This solution offers better image quality and flexibility than a simple LCD microscope. If you want to identify bacteria, however, it is more practical to culture them. Microscopes are typically only sufficient to determine if the bacteria are, for example, spherical or rod-shaped.

Accessories & Components

The mechanical stage is located in the hard case, usually beneath the included CD. If it is missing, please contact our customer service. For an upgrade, there is the BRESSER Biolux mechanical stage (Item no. 5942650).
The Barlow lens is already mounted in the eyepiece tube on many devices. It can be pulled out from the upper rim to use the zoom function.

Cameras & Software

It is often due to the camera privacy settings in Windows.

Here's how to fix the issue:
  1. Press the Windows key + i → "Settings".
  2. Select Privacy → Camera.
  3. Enable "Allow apps to access your camera".
  4. Check the list and allow access for the desired app.
Pro Tip: The MikrOkular Full HD supports the UVC standard. It can therefore be used from Windows 8 onwards without additional drivers – simply connect via USB and open the Windows Camera app. It can also work with UVC-compatible software on Linux, macOS, or Android (e.g., Photo Booth on macOS, OTG apps on Android).
The behavior is normal: The software only shows the features that your camera supports. If errors occur when saving ("Snapshot"):
  • Start the software as an administrator.
  • Check the save location (write permissions in the folder).
  • Test another folder.
  • Check your antivirus/security software.
  • Ensure that camera access is enabled in the Windows privacy settings.

Image Quality

Possible causes:
  • Sample too thick / unsuitable: Use thin samples or fixed smears.
  • No cover glass or incorrect thickness: Objectives are optimized for cover glasses.
  • Condenser incorrectly adjusted: Do not open the diaphragm too wide – it will result in low contrast.
  • Too high magnification: General rule: maximum 1000 × objective aperture. Example: With a 40x objective and aperture of 0.65, the limit is reached at approximately 650x.
