FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

For this application we recommend the BRESSER Erudit DLX 40-1000x microscope in combination with a USB camera, e.g. the BRESSER MikroCam 1.3 MP. This solution offers better image quality and flexibility than a simple LCD microscope.

If you want to identify bacteria, it is usually more useful to create a culture. Microscopes are generally only sufficient to determine whether the bacteria are, for example, spherical or rod-shaped.
The Barlow lens is already installed in the eyepiece tube on many devices. It can be pulled out at the upper ridge to use the zoom function.
Possible causes:

  • Sample too thick / unsuitable: Use thin samples or fixed smears.
  • No cover glass or incorrect thickness: Objectives are optimized for cover glasses.
  • Condenser incorrectly adjusted: Do not open the diaphragm too far – otherwise contrast will be low.
  • Magnification too high: Rule of thumb: maximum 1000 × objective aperture. Example: With a 40x objective with aperture 0.65, the limit is about 650x.

This powerful set combines the professional Science ETD-301 stereo microscope with the modern MikroCam PRO HDMI 5MP camera and the appropriate adapter. The perfectly matched unit is ideal for precise observations, high-resolution live displays, and reliable visual documentation of your results. The Microscope in DetailThe BRESSER Science ETD-301 is a reflected and transmitted light stereo magnifier with high-quality optics. It is suitable for use in medicine, agriculture and forestry, criminology, scientific research institutes, and schools, as well as for assembly and inspection of small components in precision mechanics and electronics. The particularly wide base with object table allows viewing of larger objects. The maximum object height is approx. 85 mm. The large working distance of 100 mm enables working with tools, e.g. for preparing or dissecting, measuring or testing. The instrument features LED reflected and transmitted illumination, which can be used individually or combined and each continuously adjusted. The reflected light incidence angle is particularly user-friendly adjustable. With interchangeable widefield eyepieces (WF10x) and a 9x stereo zoom objective (0.7x - 6.3x), a continuous magnification range of 7x to 63x is achieved. The coarse and fine focusing allows precise sharpness adjustment, especially at high magnifications and for photography. The eye distance and dioptre adjustment are individually adjustable. The trinocular microscope head can be rotated 360° and has two eyepiece tubes inclined at 45°. The trinocular tube can carry a DSLR / system camera (APS-C or DX format) or a C-mount camera (sensor size up to 1'') using an optional adapter. A switch diverts the light path from one eyepiece to the camera. This provides 50% light, more than a microscope with a permanent beam splitter. To connect a DSLR / system camera, the adapter with item no. 5942100 and a camera-specific T2 ring are required. A C-mount camera is connected with the adapter item no. 5942101. A PC or laptop is not required to operate the camera; you can simply connect the MikroCam MINI Full HD HDMI to an existing monitor, TV, projector or smartboard. This makes it ideal for use in teaching. Alternatively, a small BRESSER monitor can be mounted directly on the camera (see item no. 5914120). The HDMI connection is easy to make and the camera is ready for use immediately. No software installation, PC setup etc. is necessary. Thanks to lossless data transmission, very good image quality is achieved and the image always has a consistently high frame rate of 60 fps and is delay-free. This is particularly advantageous when a microscope workstation is to be digitised, e.g. in quality control or production. The supplied USB mouse is connected for control. This allows the three menus (camera settings, measurement* and display) to be controlled. *To perform measurements with the camera, a calibration slide is required (e.g. item no.: 5916710 or 5916720). The camera is also very suitable for presentations, as it operates in automatic mode when the mouse is not connected. The menus and mouse pointer are then not visible. Please note that a direct PC connection is not possible. An HDMI to USB video capture device is required for this. The USB port is only for controlling the camera with the mouse. It delivers brilliant, artefact-free images because the display matches the camera’s output resolution. Using the MikroCam and HDMI monitor set, almost any trinocular microscope with camera port can be upgraded to a digital microscope. Observation can therefore take place without a PC. The screen size is optimally chosen so that the user can observe through the microscope as usual while simultaneously viewing the image on the monitor. The monitor delivers optimal image quality with a wide 178° viewing angle, making it possible for several people to view the image without quality loss. The microscope camera’s image is shown on the HDMI monitor without delay and with a high refresh rate of 60 FPS. HDMI-based display is usually of better quality than USB camera use on a laptop or PC. This is especially beneficial for tasks performed under microscopic control. Many users also benefit from the improved ergonomics offered by viewing on an HDMI screen. Higher magnifications with high numerical aperture can be uncomfortable for users with vision problems such as floaters. Digital viewing can offer relief here. The monitor can be powered via the same power supply as the camera using the included Y-cable. A matching short angled HDMI cable is also included to avoid cable clutter at the workstation. Mounting on a MikroCam PRO or MINI is done using two screws. Screws and tool are included. BRESSER MikroCamII Microscope Camera 12MP
The BRESSER MikroCamII microscope cameras help to make photos and videos with a microscope very easy. The modern Sony® CMOS sensors give brilliant colours with very low noise and is the perfect choice for any application where true natural colours are important. The included imaging software has multiple adjustments for the capture of still images and videos. The integrated measuring* routine allows for a measurement in the camera live image. The software can be operated in the following languages: German, English, French, Polish, Russian, Turkish, Chinese. The camera housing includes the c-mount adapter thread. For use with 23.2 mm adaptations, we recommend the optional, variable 0,5x reducer (item no. 5914005). For special applications, the camera can also be mounted using the 1/4'' camera tripod thread. The BRESSER MikroCamII are equipped with a USB 3.0 port, compared to the MikroCam SP. This enables up to 8 times faster data transfers to the PC compared with the USB 2.0 standard. The camera is able to deliver more than 25 frames per second (depending on resolution, exposure time and PC performance). This is especially important when observing live microorganisms. In addition to this, the camera is exceptionally sensitive. Even in low light conditions (high magnifications, contrast methods) the camera can be operated with short exposure times.
