Maksutov Newton MN-152 David H. Levy Comet Hunter Telescope

Highly corrected optic for wide-field observation and astrophotography. Developed in collaboration with the famous "comet hunter" David H. Levy. The Maksutov-Newton system does have some pros and cons respectively to the classical newtonian design. Apart from the higher price the main disadvantage is the higher weight - the thick corrector lens at the front is the cause for this. The main advantage of the Maksutov-Newton compared to the classical newton is the sharpness of the field of view. Classical newtonian telescopes do show a sharp pinpoint star image only at the middle of the field of view - outside the optical axis they have a dominant abberation, the so called coma. This is inherent in the newtonian design, and therefore valid for all newtonian telescopes of all brands and not caused by manufacturing tolerances. Coma distorts the star image - the pinpoint star shows a tail, just like a small comet. This decreases sharpness and contrast considerably. The Maksutov-Newton shows a much sharper star image - for most applications the coma is not visible. This results in a high contrast image all over the field of view - for visual observations and for astrophotography with DSLRs alike. This makes the Maksutov-Newton a ideal all-purpose telescope, that is able to show a sharp field without the need for additional correctors.

Warning notes

Check the solar filter before every solar observation and ensure that it is not damaged. Hold it against a strong light source to detect any possible cracks and/or holes. Do not use the telescope for solar observation, even if the solar filter is only slightly damaged. In this case, contact the manufacturer for the appropriate replacement parts.
Always use the included solar filter when observing the sun. Make sure it is correctly attached to the telescope according to the instructions. The use of the solar filter is only intended in connection with this telescope.
Never look at the sun through an eyepiece/telescope without a certified protection filter. A moon filter can never be used for solar observation. The moon filter is only suitable for moon observation. The solar filter must be mounted in front of the telescope opening, not at the eyepiece. Otherwise, the concentrated light beam through the optics will immediately destroy the filter foil, leading to severe eye damage, including permanent blindness.
Check the secure fit of the solar filter before each solar observation. An accidental detachment from the objective opening can lead to immediate and permanent eye damage and blindness.
If the solar filter cannot be securely attached to the tube, improve the fit by placing several self-adhesive felt strips or similar between the solar filter and the objective opening. Never use the solar filter if it cannot be properly mounted on the telescope. In such a case, always contact our customer service first.
Be extremely cautious when observing the sun. A brief look through the unprotected optics will immediately cause severe eye damage, potentially leading to complete blindness.
Children should not look at the sun through the telescope, even with the filter properly installed. Never leave children unsupervised.
Never leave the optics unattended. Children and inexperienced adults could point the telescope at the sun without proper precautions and lose their eyesight.
Do not observe the sun after eye surgeries or other eye conditions without prior medical consultation.
Wrinkles/creases in the film are normal and do not indicate a product defect.
Do not expose the device to high temperatures.

One of the most important obstacles for the exploration of the night sky is the brightening of the night sky by artificial lights, such as streetlights. The night sky is not really dark in the vicinity of towns or cities, which reduces the visibility of objects beyond the solar systems enormously. Depending on the type of the celestial object it is possible to increase the contrast dramatically by blocking the annoying artificial light. The EXPLORE SCIENTIFIC O-III filter uses a characteristic property of the so called emission nebulae. Those objects glow in special colours, the so called emission lines. Those emission lines are linked to chemical elements - in this case oxygen. The EXPLORE SCIENTIFIC O-III nebula filter blocks all other colours (and thereby nearly all of the artificial light) and only the two emission lines of the oxygen can pass the filter. EXPLORE SCIENTIFIC 2" CLS Nebula Filter

Besides air turbulence, the brightening of the night sky is the biggest obstacle to observing faint objects beyond the solar system. Street lamps and other artificial lighting mean that the sky in human settlements is no longer really black. This affects the contrast and thus the perception of deep-sky objects. Depending on the type of celestial object, however, part of disturbing artificial light can be filtered out, making it easier to observe fainter targets.The EXPLORE SCIENTIFIC CITY LIGHT SUPRESSION - or CLS - filter uses the fact that the artificial lighting is not evenly distributed over the entire spectrum. These colours - in the case of the EXPLORE SCIENTIFIC CLS nebula filter, above all the typical colours of mercury and high-pressure lamps, used in street lighting - are suppressed, but the emissions of deep-sky objects are allowed through. With a slightly brightened sky, some relatively bright deep-sky objects are practically invisible with a telescope, for example the large galaxy M101. Using this filter makes observation much easier. A must have for any visual amateur astronomer. One of the most important obstacles for the exploration of the night sky is the brightening of the night sky by artificial lights, such as streetlights. The night sky is not really dark in the vicinity of towns or cities, which reduces the visibility of objects bejond the solar systems enourmously. Depending on the type of the celestial object it is possible to increase the contrast dramatically by blocking the annoying artifical light. The Explore Scientific H-beta filter uses a characteristic property of the so called emmission nebulae. Those objekcts glow in special colors, the so called emmission lines. Those emmission lines are linked to chemical elements - in this case hydrogen. The Explore Scientific H-beta nebula filter blocks all other colors (and thereby nearly all of the artificial light) and only the emmission line of the hydrogen can pass the filter. The result is astonoishing: suddenly nebulae are visible at locations that were completely empty without filters. In suburbian skies for example the horsehead nebula is almost not visible with a 300mm telescope. By using this filter you can see the nebula and its structures without problems. Thanks to the powerful telescope aperture of 305 mm, you get significantly more light-gathering capacity than with the smaller models and are therefore not limited to observing the moon and the planets of our solar system - you can already look far out into the universe and observe globular clusters, nebulae and galaxies with even greater brightness. Details become visible in most deep-sky objects: globular clusters are clearly resolved into individual stars and gas nebulae, which can only be guessed at with smaller devices, show structure.
